When Oh When Will The Next Detox Start?

This is always a dilemma for me: when to start the next detox? I'm always in need of one (hubby agrees), and they always seem too short, even the first one that lasted almost two years! (I was really sick and needed it.)

Money is definitely an issue, especially since I need to be on one ideally for at least two months, but so is the timing. The end of summer, I think, should be the best time--no more traveling during summer vacation. No holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's to contend with. And no birthdays or Valentine's Day that begin on Ground Hog's Day, the start of our birthday marathon that lasts until mid April.

Sure, September begins the school schedule and the stress of making sure all three kids (who are learning disabled) are not only studying for tests, but doing their homework and actually handing it in! But there's also touching base with their teachers and counselors, weekly. And the parent teacher conferences..., and IEP meetings.. .

Okay, advice to self: Next time hubby says we can "swing" it, order the supplements, and just start doing it! And don't worry about any issues, just deal with them as they arise.

Detox--Day Forty Five

Breakfast
11:00 Shake
Puffed millet, cashew butter, and honey

I'd been up helping Hubby get the two older cherubs ready to go to their cousin's wrestling match, then folding laundry, and answering a few emails. It's not unusual for me to get absorbed in other things and forget to eat. :-P My youngest enjoyed the puffed millet, too, but I put too much honey in hers and she couldn't finish it.

Lunch
1:00 Shake
This is the last shake I'll be taking.

Snack
Finished my puffed millet from this morning.

Dinner
6:00
Turkey soup, garlic, parsley, marjoram, and rice
Mary's Gone Crackers (organic wheat/gluten free herb) brown rice, quinoa, brown flax seeds, brown sesame seeds, garlic, herbs, wheat-free tamari (soybeans, salt, alcohol), sea salt

Water: 123456
Activity: Walked 40 minutes with my neighbor under slippery, but sunny and windy, conditions. About 40 min later, Mister Poochie and I headed over to the park and walked an hour in the snow on the trails. :-)

Detox--Day Thirty Eight

Breakfast
8:00 Shake with Ultra Clear Sustain and Unipro Protein
1 Quinoa Waffle and maple syrup, see recipe below

Our church's youth group (which two of our children are involved in, as is my hubby) had a pancake breakfast fundraiser going on, this morning. So, as they were preparing for their breakfast at church, I was making my favorite gluten-free waffles as a treat for me at home! As you can tell by my posts, I'm not really much of a breakfast eater after the shake which pretty much fills me up. (So do the glasses of water!) But your nutrition is all in the shake and easily digested, so that's all good. :-)

Lunch
1:40 Shake with Ultra Clear Sustain and Unipro Protein
2 Quinoa Waffles with maple syrup

Dinner
5:00 Shake with Ultra Clear Sustain and Unipro Protein

I was making cheeseballs for Christmas and had to taste both versions I made of them after accidentally shaking too much garlic salt in one of them. Of course I had to make sure I got the other one right since I can't count on anyone else's taste buds but my own. :-} Soooo, I (cringe!) ate some sour cream, cream cheese, scallions, dried onions, Canadian bacon, cheese, garlic salt, gluten-free Worchshire sauce, parsley, cayanne pepper, and walnuts. I was making these balls right before running out the door to go to our daughter's high school orchestra concert.

This recipe for Quinoa Waffles is from The Complete Food Allergy Cookbook by Marilyn Gioannini:

3/4 C Quinoa flour
Baking Powder
Cinnamon
Apple juice (I used cider)
Oil (I used olive oil)
Honey
1 Apple, grated

Water: 1234???
Activity: None

Saturday, December 20, 2008

Detox--Day Thirty Seven

Breakfast
9:00 Shake
Puffed Millet, cashew butter, and honey

Lunch
1:40 Shake
Salmon, garlic, sesame oil

Snack
2 Kiwi

Snack
Fresh cranberries, cilantro, red onions (raw), apple, lime zest, red pepper
1 Black olive

Today was a bit strange. We spent the morning vacuuming and then shampooing the carpets. I've heard good and bad things about doing the wet shampoo because of allergies..., but we've done it for years and were always glad we did it. then we quickly went shopping before caroling with the teens in our church, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army for two hours at Mega Foods. But wait, there's more! The Youth Group then had games, a meal, wreath decorating for a silent auction tomorrow at church (which, DV, will take place at the teen's fundraising pancake breakfast), and then a gift exchange. I hadn't planned to stay past the caroling, so I didn't bring my shake along.

Dinner
10:00 Shake

Crispy Rice Snacks

Dinner
6:30 Shake
Mary's Gone Crackers (organic wheat/gluten free herb) brown rice, quinoa, brown flax seeds, brown sesame seeds, garlic, herbs, wheat-free tamari (soybeans, salt, alcohol), sea salt

Water: 123456+
Activity: Running around the school for an hour doesn't count... . :-P
My doc says the inflammation in my neck has improved and is not bad at all because the detox is working to keep it down! :-) I was a little worried because I normally have to take Inflaguard on a daily basis. I'm supposed to stay away from as much "stuff" as possible so the detox will work better. The first time I did a detox, I had to be on a lot of herbals, which is much better than trying to detox using traditional meds.

Detox--Day Thirty Three

Breakfast
10:40 Shake
Raw cashews
This morning, I got carried away working on yearbook. You know the scenario: you're only going to quickly look at something, get absorbed in it, then realize a few hours have already gone by!!!

Lunch
1:30 Shake

Dinner
5:oo Shake
Salmon, sesame oil, onions, and garlic

Snack
Crispy Rice Snacks--look below for ingredients and recipe
A few (salted) pistachios

I find it easiest to modify recipes I already use than to follow new ones, but often modify ones I find as well, out of necessity. Forget asking about the ones I make up--I take after my grandmother, great aunts, and cousins (who drove me nuts, at first) when they'd say, "a pinch of this" (more like a handful, in some cases!), or "you'll know when it looks just right (color/consistency)--there, like that, see?".

I had bought Arrowhead Mills Puffed Millet for making this very treat, but couldn't find the recipe anywhere. :-P For this part of the detox, you're not supposed to consume rice (I also have a mild intolerance to it, as does my son, which is rare). I bought the organic puffed rice for Butterscotch Crunchies to make for our company at Christmas, and when I saw this recipe on the back of the box, was ecstatic--it's almost the same recipe I had for the puffed millet! (I also subbed the puffed rice in the place of cornflakes for the Butterscotch Crunchies.)

Modified Crispy Rice Snacks

1/2 C Cashew Butter (this in the place of peanut butter)
1/2 C Honey
1/2 C Nuts, chopped--I used pistachios, and only a few
2 C Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice Cereal
(I forgot to use 1/2 t vanilla extract and 1/2 t cinnamon, but it tastes just fine this way. The other recipe I have doesn't use either of these ingredients, nor does it use the nuts.)

In a bowl, mix the cashew butter and honey. Gently stir in puffed rice 'til cereal is coated well. Keep hands wet and a bowl of water where you are working. Form walnut-sized balls out of mixture, and place on lightly oiled cookie sheet or wax paper. Allow to harden. Store in an air tight container.

Variation: Use Arrowhead Mills Puffed Millet in place of puffed rice.

Enjoy!

Detox--Day Thirty Two

I've been up and (barely) at 'em since 7:15. Youngest child was feeling sick from GERD. I didn't realize she ate spaghetti for lunch at the church's pot luck the day before! Poor kid! I was too busy taking pics for our interm pastor's farewell gathering, and couldn't eat anything, including what we brought, 'cept for the shake. It usually fills me up, so I was fine. :-)

There are two favorite gluten-free recipes in my GF cookbooks I've been looking for that can be used during a detox. They are both hard to find, so I had written them out on recipe cards, but I didn't look through them since those got moved to a less convenient location other than the kitchen, for some silly reason. :-P

Breakfast
10:45 Shake

Lunch
1:00 Shake
Chicken

Dinner
5:40 Shake with Ultra Clear Plus--the Sustain was beginning to make me constipated. :-P May try it, again, toward the end of the detox.
Chicken soup with quinoa, mushrooms, garlic, ginger, parsley, and marjoram
I use a lot of garlic for two main reasons: I love it, and it replaces salt really well. :-)

Water: 12345678+
Activity: Walked 35 min in maybe 0F. The wind chill factor was earlier reported at -35F to -40F. :-P

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Detox--Day Thirty One

Detox--Day Thirty

Breakfast
10:00 Shake using Ultra Clear Sustain
I was never able to use the Sustain, but since it was given to me to try..., I wanted to see how it would be tolerated.
My face feels like it's going to explode--weather related. My pain levels, however, have not increased, more than likely thanks to the detox! :-)

Lunch
1:30 Shake

Snack
Smoked salmon--Lots of salt in it which is a big no-no, but I was hungry and was out with the girls so they could get their hair cut for Locks of Love.
Cashew Butter
1 smidgen of fresh pineapple

Dinner
5:30 Shake
Salmon, Sesame oil, and onions

Snack
Strawberries

Water: 12345+
Activity: None

Detox--Day Twenty Nine

Breakfast
10:00 Shake
I've been up-and-at-'em since 6:30, this morning, and was even doing the encouraging,"Keep running after the bus and she'll see you and stop!" bit from the door to my frantic son. It was -8F at that time!!! Oldest child was already standing at the corner and was picked up, thankfully, unlike on Tuesday when she was running after the bus and son wasn't even out the door!!! It's dark and frigid in the mornings up here in the frozen tundra, so I don't blame the kids for waiting last minute! :-} After youngest left for her bus, I started working on yearbook. Once I start, it's sometimes hard to stop! :-P

Lunch
1:30 Shake

Dinner
5:00 Shake
Chicken

Water: 123456
Activity: Walked about 20 minutes in snow flurries, up two steep hills, and around the neighborhood with my neighbor and her poochie.

Thursday, December 11, 2008

Detox--Day Twenty Eight

Brunch
11:30 Shake
Couldn't get up, this morning. There's a lot of pressure in my head and it was heavy, as were my eyes. The weather must be changing... .

Snack
Chicken
2 dates
I eat a whole lot more fruit when its in season in the summer. I should in the winter, too, especially while on a detox.

Dinner
5:00 Shake
Chicken soup with onions, garlic, quinoa, parsley, and marjoram

Snack
Quinoa with maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon

Water: 1234567+
To me, water's been tasting really blah which makes it harder to fill my daily quota of 8+ glasses. You need water to help rid toxins either by elimination and perspiration. Exhalation is the third, but not dependant on agua.
Activity: Took two walks back-to-back. First went with poochie to the park on snowy trails for 30 min under sunny skies, then came home and walked with my neighbor and her poochie for about 35 min under clouds. My body feels good, but brain fog is bad and head is not happy.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Detox--Day Twenty Seven

Breakfast
9:30 Shake
My pain level is up, today, as is the brain fog. It's a good day to do more "mindless" things, like choosing pics to upload for my youngest daughter's school's yearbook. It was -1F at 7:00, this morning, but that is life up here in the frozen tundra of northern Wisconsin!

Lunch
1:30 Shake

Snack
Apple cider

Dinner
5:30 Shake
Chicken, garlic, parsley, marjoram, and cayanne pepper

Detox--Day Twenty Six

Breakfast
7:50 Shake

Lunch
12:20 Shake

Snack

Dinner
5:15 Shake
Spinach salad with duck, avocado, and cashews
Today was the third day taking the Unipro Protein instead of the Ultra Balance Protein. So far, so good! :-)

Water: 12345+
Activity: Walked and ran around yard of 5-6" snow with poochie about 15 minutes--not quite enough, but better than nothing. It was an absolutely crazy day!

Monday, December 8, 2008

Detox--Day Twenty Five

Breakfast
9:00 Shake

Lunch
1:30 Shake
After running my youngest in for blood work, this morning, and then to school, I was totally exhausted. That used to be the norm for me before I did my first detox, but is not normal at all for me, now. I wasn't sure what it was 'til after the kids came home from school and were all talking about a snow storm coming through just south of us later this evening. So, this lethargy, blah and such can indeed be blamed once again on the barometric pressure.

Dinner
5:15 Shake
Duck soup with quinoa, garlic, mushrooms, and spinach
Totally whipped. Face hurts and I feel like a wet noodle. :-P

Water: 1234??? No idea how much, today
Activity: Too busy and worn out to do anything but take poochie out and walk him around in the yard which is white with about 2 1/2" of snow.

Lunch

11:40 Shake

Chicken Soup--chicken, garlic, onions, quinoa, spinach, mushrooms, marjoram, parsley

Dinner

5:30 Shake

Duck, garlic, marjoram, parsley
My youngest was getting grossed out as she watched me pull stuff out of the bird before throwing it into the oven. Honestly, at that age, I had felt the same way several times when I'd watch my mom prepare turkey for Thanksgiving. Ditto the first time I actually did it, but imagining myself having done it many times by watching my mom helped.

The thing with it being
duck is a very different story. I had a beloved pet duck while growing up that was given to me as a birthday present by a friend. Unfortunately, we could only keep him for a few months because we were zoned residential..., and had to bring him to a farm... . :-( My great aunt and parents had tricked me into tasting "kacsa" (Hungarian), but in Switzerland, I bravely ordered "caneton" (French) to try it.
Yup, I did that with escargot, too, in a soup while in the Bahamas. Kind of rubbery, but not bad. Still, I had to keep the word "snail" out of my thoughts while eating it! Motivation: I had
kinda regretted not trying turtle soup when our neighbors made it and invited anyone who wanted to try this possibly once-in-a-lifetime entree. Hey, I'm not gonna fix either of those for supper!!! :-P
Oh, and rabbit--the day I made it for the first time (while on my first detox) was a few days after watching a bunch of crows raid, kill, and devour a nest full of newborn baby bunnies, which made me positively sick. I had witnessed the parents build their nest by the side of the house, and watched a couple younger rabbits leaping around as the dad gingerly checked on the mom either while or after the babies were born.
I hope this isn't grossing anyone else out! This kind of talk always makes me want to consider becoming a vegetarian!!!

Water: 12345? I feel parched, but I often am in the winter--in a different way than in the summer--probably 'cuz the house gets dry with the heat on. :-P

Activity: Baking and cleaning??? :-P

Our kitten had an eye injury and the dog needed shots, so I was at the vet's for a little over an hour. Also brought our van in for bodywork. About a month and a half ago, we hit a deer and were going to live with the few chipped dents on the grill made by the doe's hoofs... 'til we were told the headlights were damaged in the accident. :-P I needed my weekly adjustment, too, so I ran off for that. Youngest child also home because of GERD and she felt awful. There were are few things I needed from Sam's Club, and this item was suddenly placed at the top of the list! I didn't have much, but this drink hit the spot! :-) I love the Mango one, too, but it has too much orange juice in it. For this detox, I'm supposed to stay away from citrus stuff. Unfortunately, some of the Naked juices contain wheat/gluten, so read labels carefully if you're celiac or gluten intolerant.

Detox--Day Ten

It was a very busy day, today. Before rushing out of the house to go to church, I had to make sure the huge pan of lasagna I made last night (for the twenty two people coming over for a reunion for friends from out of state!) was in the oven to warm up before we arrived back home.

Detox--Day Nine

Breakfast
9:30 Shake
Chicken broth, marjoram, garlic
Pieces of apples, here and there

Lunch
1:15 Shake

Dinner
5:30 Shake
Cornish hen, garlic, marjoram, bay leaf
Apple crisp--look below for ingredients

Sadly, we don't have any apple trees like we did in Illinois. The ones we planted here 4 years ago (and replaced a year later only to die on us, again :-() died because we have extremely sandy soil that needed more than just good compost and sphagnum moss; it needs clay, too. Happily, a friend from church gave us a large bagful of apples she was trying to find a home for. :-)

I've had to modify my mom's recipe for Apple Crisp to use gluten free flours (like almond or rice) as well as use a substitute for sugar (like honey or maple syrup) since I'm also intolerant to that.

This is a very tasty treat, but try not to overindulge as it is rather sweet and should be limited during a detox:

Recipe:

Modified Apple Crisp

Grease a 10x6x2" baking dish with sesame, apricot, or safflower oil. Place 4 cups of sliced apples in a 10x6x2" baking dish. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 cup of water.

In a bowl, combine 3/4 cup of rice flour with 1/3 cup of same oils as above. Blend with a spoon 'til crumbly. Slowly add about 1 cup of either honey or maple syrup and continue to mix with spoon.

Drop mixture on top of apples, and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

The nice thing about this dessert is you don't have to be exact about any of the ingredients. You could add more apples, or use less; make more of the crumbled topping, or less; add more cinnamon or sweetener, or less of either of them.

If you try this recipe, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do!

Detox--Day Five

Breakfast
I was up late, last night and was zapped, this morning, so I didn't have my shake 'til 9:30am. Our six month old kitten has been trying to play with my oldest daughter's betta fish which is in an uncovered 10 gallon aquarium in her room. The night before (also a late night), his back legs and tail had fallen into the betta's abode.  Thankfully, it only has about 6" of water in it! The fuzzball has been sleeping in our room the past two nights. Last night, he slept on our bed, and I kept checking on him 'cuz I was afraid he was going to get squashed by my hubby who moves around a lot at night!  :-P  I shouldn't worry--he was born on an alpaca farm and thus used to larger animals, and is also very careful to stay away from a prancing pooch!

Lunch
1:00 Shake
Watermelon

Dinner
5:30ish  Shake
Cauliflower, rice, and olive oil

Water: 12345678+
Activity:  I bounced around on my mini trampoline... .  --At least I was moving!  :-)

Detox--Day Four

Breakfast
8:00am Shake
10:30am watermelon
Stomach feels really good, today!

Lunch
12:10 Shake

Dinner
5:30 Shake
Green beans, spaghetti squash, olive oil

Water: 123456+
Activity: Does dragging, lifting, and carrying large, heavy pumpkins around count? :-P Okay, this is legit--walked 1 1/2 hours as it was snowing with my neighbor Pat and her dog. :-)

Had an adjustment, today. Also took Inflaguard because my lower back, and of course my neck which is a given, were not very happy. Dr. Dan has told me to try not to use this while on the detox. Vitamins and enzymes are good, though. Dr. K had me on several enzymes and also vitamins when I started my first detox six years ago. Once I was tested, it showed that Metazyme was the best choice for me, so I still take this. TymeZyme, I was told, was the second choice, and would be a first choice for anyone who is seeking a really good enzyme. You can get it here, too.

Detox--Day One

I'm feeling really miserable physically for the second time this week. It mainly has to do with storm fronts/barometric pressure that have figuratively been pummeling our area, or more accurately, me! My doc reminded me on Wednesday that low pressure systems are going to make anyone with Fibromyalgia feel really lousy. Pain levels up, increased cognitive difficulties, face feeling like it's going to explode, headache, and body-wide achiness. Draggy, lethargic, debilitated. It drives me nuts because there's so much I need to do, yet I can't do it. A long, hot, steamy shower would help, but it takes a lot of effort to even do that, and then I'm left exhausted.

Breakfast
Crawling out of bed at 10am, I had my first breakfast shake at 11am. I can't eat when I first get up in the mornings, even if I've been awake and am just vegetating. I hate feeling like a slug, and always feel guilty when I don't "rise above" the "blah" and lethargy and act like a normal person would. But this unfortunately is normal for me, especially this time of the year. While it may be a "bad" day for me physically, it's one that I still can--and do--rejoice in the Lord.

Lunch
I took my second shake at 1:15 even though I wasn't hungry, then took a nice long shower. My stomach now feels happy, relaxed, and calm. It gets that way when I've eaten totally gluten -free meals, especially at our friend Olive's home, and also at her daughter's gluten-free, allergy-free reception and dinner which was catered by her friend, Sueson Vess.

Snack
Even though I wasn't hungry, I had three kiwi around 3:30.

Dinner
Took third shake at 5:00, and had acorn squash with olive oil. My kids aren't big fans of squash, so this is a treat for me! (Actually, don't tell them I snuck it into their stew tonight, okay?)

My First Detox

Almost seven years ago, I started my first detox with Metagenics products and a super chiropractor/nutritionist doc. I was very, very, very ill, and my traditional medical docs didn't know what to do for me. My fingertips were a dusky brownish color, not healthy pink. I could not walk halfway out into our backyard without my legs getting heavy and cramping, and being short of breath. Eating was exhausting and a real chore--I had to force myself to eat, but all that effort literally went in one end and out the other due to mal absorption. I lost weight, and I was thin to begin with.

Also, every month when I started ovulating, I got sick, and then sicker with each new month. My friend, Dr. Devin Starlanyl, told me it wasn't coincidental, that there must be a hormonal issue. It was a very frightening time in my life. When my three very young children needed me the most, I was barely even there for them. I was dying and I was only 39 years old!

My doc put me on several enzymes to help aid digestion, which was clearly a problem. The liquid detox was much easier to take, and since it's very easily absorbed nutritional food, my body was getting what it needed even if that was the only thing I could "eat". The tiring part for me was actually making the detox shake. But it was worth it!

After being on this for only about two weeks, I was feeling stronger, more alert, and my fingertips were losing that dirty, tinged look and were turning pink! Within a month, I was allowed to start exercising by taking walks. Two months after starting the detox, we went to Matthiessen State Park, got lost on one of the trails, and ended up walking for three hours!!! (I think I was the only one happy about that!) The thrilling thing is I could have kept going!!!

It was nearly two years later when I finally finished the detox. It was an extremely long time, but it was very necessary for me. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Very much so. My hubby still tells me that was the healthiest he's ever seen me in the 17 years we've been married.

This will be my third detox using Metagenics products. It literally saved my life.

It's been almost two years since I last did a detox, and it's long overdue. My stomach's been whining and complaining to me for months, and the constant discomfort and feeling really blah has convinced my hubby to say, "It's time."

I've also been more than a little lethargic; the other day I finally dragged myself out of bed at 11:30am!!! It could very well have been the storm front that was creeping upon us, the colder weather that's settling in, the chronic anemia, adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue, or fibromyalgia that plague me. Another unwelcome constant companion is chronic pain due to chronic myofascial pain. I'm honestly not complaining. I've accepted these life-long, er, "companions" and have learned to look beyond them. And, besides, these kind of things build character! :-)

Seven years ago, when I was 39 years old, I was a wreck, physically. My doc in Chicago validated my lethargy when an Energy Level Panel test, done through Great Smokies Diagnostic Labs, (now known as Genova Diagnostics), verifying that my mitochondria was not being fed. Other tests revealed that I had high levels of Uranium, Lead, Aluminum, Tin, and Strontium. Food allergy testing showed that 77 out of 88 foods I was tested for I was either intolerant or allergic to! And anything I put into my mouth made my stomach turn, even water!!! At that time, this doc told me he couldn't help when it came to nutritional support. I was extremely thankful for what he was able to help me with, as well as the informative tests he ran. My traditional docs had already given up on me, saying they had no idea what to do to help. Fortunately, my friend, Dr. Devin Starlanyl did, and gave me the name of two docs in my area she highly recommended.

Processed foods, junk foods, and getting gluten contamination are some reasons my liver has been working overtime, and it's ready for a well-deserved break!
